Tide Ever Rising by Mandi Slack

16235814Genre: Ghosts
Paperback: 208 Pages
Published: February 12, 2013
Series: None
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Kadence Reynold’s favorite pastime is exploring old ghost towns. When she and her sister, Maysha stumble across an old journal and cheap pendant hidden in the depths of a crumbling foundation near Eureka, Utah, their world is suddenly turned upside down. Immediately, strange dreams and premonitions begin to haunt “Kadie” as she learns more about the keeper of the journal, Charlotte Clark. Kadie sets out on a journey to learn more about Charlotte and her family, and she and Maysha travel to Bremerton, Washington, where they discover Charlotte's still living twin sister, Adelaide and her family.

My Review:

When I started reading this book I wasn't really sure if it was for me. At the first page I was mildly bored and uninterested. By the second and third page I found myself leaning closer to the pages. Then by the first chapter I KNEW I wasn't putting this book down until I finished it. And that is exactly what happened.

Mandi's characters are so believable and alive that I was wishing I was their accompanying them on their adventures. The characters are thrust into constant danger and suspense as they figure out the mystery behind an old journal. Kadie has a knack for adventure and after finding an old journal along with a antique necklace her curiosity gets the best of her. She takes off to find the owner of the journal and hopes to get some answers about the story that she discovered.

Through out the book I was on my toes trying to figure out the mystery along side Kadie and her sister. I loved Maysha's character. She is super hilarious and ready to put her sister in her place. I also really liked their relationship and how much they loved each other. Mandi's creation of the characters was very likable and the mystery kept me interested till the end.

Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement Moore

Genre: Ghosts
9535352Hardcover: 416 Pages
Published: July 12, 2011
Series: Goodnight Family
            1. Texas Gothic
            2. Spirit and Dust
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Amy Goodnight knows that the world isn't as simple as it seems—she grew up surrounded by household spells and benevolent ghosts. But she also understands that "normal" doesn't mix with magic, and she's worked hard to build a wall between the two worlds. Not only to protect any hope of ever having a normal life.

Ranch-sitting for her aunt in Texas should be exactly that. Good old ordinary, uneventful hard work. Only, Amy and her sister, Phin, aren't alone. There's someone in the house with them—and it's not the living, breathing, amazingly hot cowboy from the ranch next door.

It's a ghost, and it's more powerful than the Goodnights and all their protective spells combined. It wants something from Amy, and none of her carefully built defenses can hold it back.

This is the summer when the wall between Amy's worlds is going to come crashing down.

My Review:

When a book starts off with, "The goat was in the tree again" you know for sure that it's going to be an interesting book. Seriously, my first thought was did I read that right? I literally looked around with a confused expression and then thought what the heck lets keep reading. I'm so glad I kept reading because this book turned out to be better than I expected. Yes, it was slow for the first half of the book, but by the middle it picked up pace. The writing style was interesting and I felt like I connected with the characters.

The speaking style of the characters was simple, yet intriguing. I loved all the characters because of their spunk and attitude. Amy Goodnight and  her sister Phin were a hoot and not like the regular female leads. They didn't hopelessly fall in love with the first guy they saw, they made mature and smart decisions, and they definitely didn't bore me to death. Their characters were funny and entertaining. My favorite parts were when Amy and Ben got into arguments and bickered over the most stupidest things. At first they didn't like each other, but as their bantering continued they grew to tolerate each other.

It's finally summer break. Amy and her sister Phin are spending the summer tending to their aunts ranch in Texas. All Amy wants is to have a non-eventful summer (with the exception of the goat in the tree) where she can just relax and be herself. But life has other things planned for her. What she thought was going to be a boring summer turned into a very eventful one. First, she had to run out of her shower in her underwear to save a stupid goat who got it self stuck in a tree. Then she meets her annoying neighbor Bed, who gets under her skin. Finally, she has a ghost on her tail asking for help. The Goodnights have supernatural powers in their family. While the rest of her family accepts their abilities to talk to ghosts, all Amy wants is to be normal. Little does she know, her supernatural abilities are very powerful and she's the only one who can help this ghost.

This combination of magic, ghosts, and supernatural abilities with a mix of science was my favorite thing about this novel. It was an interesting topic to read and the adding of Texas history made this an even more entertaining. Overall,  a really good book to read. I definitely recommend it if you like a good ghost story with a hint of magic! Plus the romance was slow and sweet!

            4. Darkest Hour
            5. Haunted
            6. Twilight
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Suze has gotten used to ghosts. She's a mediator, after all, and communicating with the dead is all in a day's work. So she certainly never expected to fall in love with one: Jesse, a nineteenth- century hottie. But when she discovers that she has the power to determine who becomes a ghost in the first place, Suze begins to freak. It means she can alter the course of history ... andprevent Jesse's murder, keeping him from ever becoming a ghost -- and from ever meeting Suze.

Will Jesse choose to live without her, or die to love her?

My Review:

A few months after the ending of Haunted, Suze and Paul have come to an uneasy truce because of the amount of time they have to spend together. But the lure of learning more about her powers, what it means to be a shifter, and her desire to keep Jesse safe from Paul's devious plans has Suze getting 'mediator lessons' from her enemy. It isn't easy being around the guy who you want to kill, but Suze has to suck it up for Jesse. While getting lessons from Paul, Suze is also spying on him. She knows he's up to no good and if she can figure out what he wants then maybe she can stop him.

During one of their meetings Paul explains how shifters have the ability to go back in time. Suze is skeptical about this idea at first. You need a lot of training, power, and strength to be able to go back in time and if you accidently change something then the entire world can be affected in major ways. When Suze finds out that Paul wants to go back in time and stop Jesse from being murdered so he won't become the ghost Suze loves, she freaks out. She doesn't want that to happen because she is in love with Jesse. If he survives then there won't be a Jesse and Suze. But how can she be so selfish? Will Suze be able to stop Paul or will she let him do what he wants so Jesse can life a full life?

The plot gets thicker at this point of the book. Suze doesn't want Paul to go back to change something that can ruin her life in the present. But Paul is set on his idea and he will go back in time no matter what. While trying to stop Paul, Suze and Jesse are caught in this mess and end up going back into time to when Jesse was murdered. Cabot threw in this crazy plot twist and I was honestly caught off guard. I didn't expect all of them to go back in time. I can't believe this amazing series has finally come to an end! I enjoyed this roller coaster ride and if you haven't read this series yet, then I suggest you drop what you're doing and go find a library near you!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Here's some crazy news! Meg Cabot has announced that there will be a 7th installment to her Mediator series. WHATTTTTTTTT!!!! OH. MY. GOD!!! I CAN'T EVEN HOLD IN MY EXCITMENT!!!!!

Book Info:

In REMEMBRANCE, the seventh installment of the Mediator series, all Susannah Simon wants is to make a good impression at her first job since graduating from college (and becoming engaged to Dr. Jesse de Silva).

But when she stumbles across an ancient murder, old ghosts—and ex-boyfriends—aren’t all that come back to haunt her.

REMEMBRANCE will be the first ever adult installment of the Mediator, published by William Morrow, the adult division of HarperCollins, the company that brought you the YA books in the series.

Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Is it possible to be haunted by someone who isn't even dead?

Suze is used to trouble, but this time she's in deep: Ghostly Jesse has her heart, but Paul Slater, a real flesh-and-blood guy, is warm for her form. And mediator Paul knows how to send Jesse to the Great Beyond. For good.

Paul claims he won't do anything to Jesse as long as Suze will go out with him. Fearing she'll lose Jesse forever, Suze agrees. But even if Suze can get Jesse to admit his true feelings for her, what kind of future can she have with a guy who's already dead?

My Review:

I swear, this series just gets better and better. Suze's life in Carmel California is going the way she hoped it would go. She has helped many ghosts with their problems and helped them move on. She even helped Jesse's fiancé who wasn't able to move on until her body was found and put to rest. Because of the craziness with Maria, Jesse and Suze's relationship was put on a hold. In the beginning of this book, Suze complained a lot about Jesse and why he didn't like her anymore. Although the case wasn't that Jesse didn't like Suze anymore, but the fact that he was a ghost and he would be moving on to the after life and that would devastate Suze. Because of Jesse's distance, Suze got herself interested in Paul, another mediator who was pure evil. He wanted to get rid of Jesse forever, kill Suze and be the only mediator alive.

In this book, Paul has reemerged into Suze's life and is back to create more drama. Paul claims he knows what they are, why they can communicate with ghosts, and what hidden powers they have. But Suze doesn't know why he's so intent on teaching her about their powers when he tried to kill her last time they hung out. Suze must figure out Paul's intentions before it's too late and he does something to hurt the people she loves.

Meanwhile, Jesse has been keeping a low radar around Suze. He doesn't seem interested in talking to her, sitting with her, and enjoying her company. But when he learns that Paul is back and has enrolled at Suze's school, these two hot heads are about to go at it with one another in a battle for, much to her surprise, Suze's heart. Overall, another good book in this series!

Darkest Hour #4 by Meg Cabot

            2. Ninth Key
            3. Reunion
            4. Darkest Hour
            5. Haunted
            6. Twilight
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

When the nineteenth--century ghost of Maria de Silva wakes her up in the middle of the night, Suze knows this is no ordinary visitation -- and not just from the knife at her throat, either. In life, Maria was the fiancee of Jesse -- the same Jesse who was murdered a hundred and fifty years before. The same Jesse Suze is in love with.

Maria threatens Suze: The backyard construction must cease. Suze has a pretty good idea what -- or rather, who -- Maria doesn't want found. But in solving Jesse's murder, will Suze end up losing him forever?

My Review:

This is by far the most romantic book in this series. I found it to be heart wrenching, sad, happy and everything in between. I loved this book the most because we get to go deeper behind Jesse's past and we met some of the people he knew. I also loved that Suze and Jesse have come a long way to admit their feelings for each other. Finally, their romance has started to pick up pace and it has gotten me all giddy!!!

Suze comes face-to-face with Maria, the ghost who was engaged to her beloved Jesse. Maria isn't able to move on from the real world because she has been harboring secrets from Jesse for years. She wants to tell him what really happened the day of their wedding and he died because of her. But before Maria has a chance to tell Jesse anything, Suze and Jesse find out there were more secrets in his past that have now surfaced. The plot quickly gets interesting and gets the reader guessing who killed Jesse decades ago. Plus things start to get more interesting when Suze finds out the eight-year-old boy she is babysitting is also a mediator. I really liked how Cabot put surprising gems into her story that kept the reader entertained through out the book.

            4. Darkest Hour
            5. Haunted

Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

The RLS Angels are out for blood, and only Suze can stop them--since she's the only one who can see them. The four ghostly teenagers died in a terrible car accident, for which they blame Suze's classmate Michael... and they'll stop at nothing until he's joined them in the realm of the dead.

As Suze desperately fends off each attempt on Michael's life, she finds she can relate to the Angels' fury. Because their deaths turn out not to have been accidental at all. And their killer is only too willing to strike again.

My Review:

Suze is back and ready for more ghost ass-kicking. She was able to help "Red" in the previous book, clear his name, get out of a tough situation, and get closer to Jesse. Suze and Jesse have finally gotten to a point in their ghost/mediator relationship where they are able to talk and have fun with each other. Suze is learning new things about Jesse, his past, and why he is still stuck in the real world. Jesse has also learned new things about Suze, like her habits, her likes/dislikes, and has gotten to know her on a personal level. I love that Jesse and Suze have a thing going on between them, but they both know that it can't last forever. Suze is real and Jesse is a ghost. How can they possibly be together?

In Reunion, Suze is caught between the ghosts of four teens (The RLS Angels) who died in a car accident and Michael, the boy at her school the ghosts blame for their deaths. It is an all out war between the ghosts and Michael. They want revenge and they will do anything to get what they want. It doesn't help that Suze is in the middle of it all. With the help from Jesse, Suze sets out to figure out what really happened the night of the crash. Will Suze be able to help Michael or will she be caught between this war and get hurt?

Overall, a good book. However, I felt like the plot was a little slower and there could have been more action scenes. But One thing I did like was the fact that Jesse and Suze seem to be getting closer. I really want to see them together, but the fact that Jesse is a ghost complicates things. I can't wait to see how Cabot turns this love story around and to see how she can make a ghost and a human fall in love.

Ninth Key #2 by Meg Cabot

            2. Ninth Key
            3. Reunion
            4. Darkst Hour
            5. Haunted
            6. Twilight
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

Everything is going great for Suze. Her new life in California is a whirlwind of parties and excellent hair days. Tad Beaumont, the hottest boy in town, has even asked Suze out on her very first date. Suze is so excited that she's willing to ignore her misgivings about Tad... particularly the fact that he's not Jesse, whose ghostly status--not to mention apparent disinterest in her--make him unattainable.

What Suze can't ignore, however, is the ghost of a murdered woman whose death seems directly connected to dark secrets hidden in none other than Tad Beaumont's past.

My Review:

So far the Mediator series has been an entertaining read. I am loving the characters of Suze, her family and Jesse. All the characters were interesting and I didn't feel the need to roll my eyes at them or get annoyed with their behaviors. Cabot created a unique ghost story that was fast paced, mysterious, and a light read. I loved the idea that Suze was a mediator between the dead and living. It made her character stand out more because of this idea that she can communicate with ghosts and they can communicate back.

So in this second installment Suze is awakened by a screaming female ghost who wants her to deliver a message to "Red," that he didn't kill her. After doing a little digging around Suze discovers a man named Thaddeus "Red" Beaumont who happens to be the father of Tad, a guy Suze danced with at a party. Naturally, Tad becomes Suze's love interest in this book and she manages to get into the Beaumont residence to deliver the message. But things turn for the worse and Suze is in big trouble! However, Jesse is always watching out for Suze and once again he is there to help her. While the interaction between Suze and Tad was nice, I was much more drawn to the scenes with Suze and Jesse.

There were some unexpected surprises and twists towards the end of this book. I was so excited to read this book that I ended up finishing the entire series. There was just something about the plot, characters, and the story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Plus the romance was slow and sweet. I liked how in the beginning Jesse and Suze didn't acknowledge each other at all, but somehow they managed to be there for each other when they were in danger. Overall, an awesome book to read!

Goodreads Synopsis:

A love that knows no bounds.

But as Abbey finally learns the full truth about the dark fate that links her to Caspian and ties them both to the town of Sleepy Hollow, she suddenly has some very hard choices to make. Caspian may be the love of her life, but is that love worth dying for?

Beautifully spun, emotionally gripping, and irresistibly romantic, The Hidden will leave you breathless.

My Review:

Abby and Caspian are finally together. We now know that Caspian is a ghost and Abby wasn't just imagining him. They have been spending lots of time together and getting a chance to get to know each other. Everything seems all fine and dandy until three creepy teens start following Abby around. Everywhere she goes she sees them. And when Abby tries to tell Caspian he shrugs it off as her imagination and disappears. But when things start to get weird and the three teens show up at her house, Abby has had enough. She confronts Caspian and finds out secrets that she didn't know about him. Caspian has been hiding secrets from her and Abby will do anything to figure out what the are.

The ending took me by surprise. I'm not sure how I feel with what happened but it was something new. The characters were well developed, the pacing was good, and the story line was intriguing enough to keep the reader entertained. I really liked how the author incorporated the legend of Sleepy Hollow, which made this story creepy and interesting at the same time. If you have read this yet, I recommend you do cause it won't disappoint.

Published: August 31, 2010
Series: The Hollow
            1. The Hollow

            3. The Hidden
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:

An impossible truth. An impossible love.

After a summer spent reclaiming her sanity and trying to forget the boy she fell in love with--the boy who must not exist, cannot exist, because she knows that he is dead--Abbey returns to Sleepy Hollow, ready to leave the ghosts of her past behind. She throws herself into her schoolwork, her perfume-making, and her friendship with Ben, her cute and funny lab partner, who just might be her ticket to getting over Caspian once and for all.

But Abbey can never get over Caspian, and Caspian has no choice but to return to her side, for Caspian is a Shade, and Abbey is his destiny. They are tied not only to each other, but also to the town of Sleepy Hollow, and to the famous legend that binds their fates--a legend whose dark truths they are only beginning to guess....

My Review:

Abbey has been desperately trying to forget Caspian, a boy she feel in love with only to discover he was a ghost. Shocked by the discovery and doubting her mental sanity, Abbey left Sleepy Hollow for the summer to forget everything. Now that summer is ending and it's time for school, Abbey must put on her big girl pants and return home. At first she throws herself into her school work and her new friend Ben, who happens to be alive and real. Trying to stay busy everyday in order to feel normal again is very hard for Abby. Then, one day, Caspian reappears in her life, and Abby realizes that you can never outrun your destiny no matter how hard you try.

This second installment goes deeper into the mystery of Caspian. Is he real? Or is he a figment of Abby's imagination? Due to Abby's friends death, she has been having a hard time dealing with the pain. And Caspian is around all the time. So it makes sense that Abby has found some comfort in Caspian. But if he's not real then how can she be the only one who sees him? This is where the mystery lies. I honestly had an amazing time trying to figure out how Abby was able to see Caspian. Why was she able to touch him, talk to him, connect with him, but others couldn't? Well it turns out that the day Abby's friend died wasn't her death day. Instead someone else was supposed to die. The mystery is thrilling and if you haven't read this series yet, I recommend you go read it cause it will not disappoint!

Published: December 6, 2011
Series: Haunting Emma
            1. Deception
            2. Betrayal
            3. Surrender
Rating:★★★★

Goodreads Synopsis:
After a devastating battle at headquarters in New York, the ghostkeeping world is in shambles. When Emma and Bennett return home, they are determined to defeat the wraithmaster, Neos, forever. But it's not going to be easy. Bennett's parents kick him out when they realize he is still using drugs to enhance his powers. Emma is convinced her aunt has come back from the dead to warn her of a new threat. And worst of all, Neos is using wraiths to possess the students at Thatcher Academy. If the ghosts manage to take over the entire school, even Emma won't be strong enough to stop them. But if either she or Bennett sacrifice his or her powers, they might be able to save the ghostkeeping world once and for all-and break the "ghostkeepers lose their powers when they fall in love" curse. The question is: who will be the one to surrender all power?

Fast-paced and romantic, this conclusion to the Haunting Emma trilogy will thrill readers as it brings the ghostly mystery to a close.

My Review:
This series has finally ended with a bang. I was skeptical about the ending of Surrender since I wasn't a big fan of the second book but, this book took me by surprise.
Emma and her friends are dealing with the aftermath of the battle at Knell; the ghost-keepers headquarters in New York. Everyone is confused and hurt trying to figure out what to do next. However, Emma is now more determined than ever to banish Neos once and for all. To do this, she must first locate the ashes of Neos in Thatcher academy with the help of her friends. But that's easier said then done. She's going to need everyone's help including Bennett. But Bennett has been kicked out from his house because he has been using a powerful drug to enhance his powers so he can be with Emma. Can Emma defeat Neos and save Bennett before he destroys himself? Well you're gonna have to read to find out what happens.
Overall, a good book to read. Sure it had its annoying moments and I just wanted to hit someone. But the characters came to their senses and did what had to be done in order to save their families and friends. Very quick read and an interesting take on ghosts.

Betrayal #2 by Lee Nichols

8789405Genre: Ghosts
Paperback: 288 Pages
Published: March 1, 2011
Series: Haunting Emma
            1. Deception
            2. Betrayal
            3. Surrender
Rating: ★★

Goodreads Synopsis:
Emma Vaile is the most powerful ghostkeeper in centuries. Which is great when she's battling the wraith-master Neos, but terrible when she's flirting with fellow ghostkeeper (and soul mate) Bennett. When ghostkeepers fall in love, the weaker one loses all power, and that's not something Bennett can handle. Heartbroken and alone, Emma tries to lose herself in school with fellow ghostkeeper, Natalie. When a new team of ghostkeepers arrive-one a snarky teen
boy, the other a British scholar-Emma finds solace in training for the battle against Neos. But as the team grows stronger, they are threatened by an unknown force. One they thought was good.

As chilling and page-turning as Deception, this sequel will grab readers and hold them to the last page. No one is safe from suspicion as Emma closes in on the traitor.

My Review:
So you think you have a ghost living in your house? Well you wouldn't call the Ghost Busters! No. You would call Emma Vaile! She is 17 years old, but she is the most powerful ghostkeeper in generations. She can summon, dispell, communicate, and of course see ghosts at will. She is kind of like Buffy just minus the vampires.

In Betrayal, most of the mystery has been revealed. We know what a ghostkeeper is, what powers Emma has, we know about the Knell and their shady involvement in Emma's life. Besides these mysteries, Emma struggles in her relationship with Bennett. If they touch too much the stronger of the two absorbs the weaker ones powers. And of course that's Emma. Putting aside these issues, we find out that Emma's classmates now call her The Quarterback Killer after an incident in the first book regarding Coby's death. And to top it off, Neos is determined now more than ever to get Emma's powers. To keep herself, her friends, and her family safe, Emma must learn to fight and stop Neos before he causes more damage and succeeds in stealing Emma's powers.

I had some trouble connecting with the characters. I felt like there was too much drama and not enough solutions. Surprisingly, Bennett got on my nerves a lot. Supposedly, he was in a relationship with Emma, yet he seemed to be away for most of it. Emma might as well be dating her self. Bennett would appear and disappear without thinking about Emma's feelings. I felt like he should have told her how he felt instead of toying with her emotions. When she called Bennett after something frightening happened to her, he didn't even pick up the phone. Instead he called a few days later not considering the fact that Emma might have felt alone and afraid. But she had wonderful, supportive friends who were there for her 24/7. I didn't like this book as much as I liked the first. Hopefully, the third book has more character building and is able to hold the readers interest.

How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her - one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.
My Short Review:
It was original and kept me entertained for a good four hours or so. The pacing was okay but I would have liked it to be a little faster. I really liked the concept of the story which was based on Washington Irving's classic tale of Sleepy Hollow. Kind of creepy when you read at night (never doing that again!) so be warned. The characters had little potential but I believe they could have been expanded. Abbey's character was believable in the sense that the sorrow and grief in the book wasn't dulled down. I felt like I could feel her pain because that's how detailed the book was. Caspian on the other hand, was an interesting character. He is a ghost and only on his birthday he is able to turn human. I don't want to say too much, but his back story was fascinating to read. Overall, the book was fine. Not bad, but nowhere near amazing. So if you like the idea of Sleepy Hollow told with a unique perspective then do pick this book up.
